Florida Reiki Regulation - ALERT
by Ellen Louise Kahne, Reiki Master

Posted by ShadowWolf on September 07, 1999 at 08:45:38:

     Dear Friends,

First I wish to let you all know I am well but have very little access to a computer until I get settled in my own place here is Florida and that is the main reason I have been so quiet lately.

As some may be aware the practice of Reiki in Florida is experiencing an attempt at control by a specific group of people in the healing field, namely the people that teach Massage.

I will state at this time that there is currently no "Law" regarding this but that it is the position of the Massage Board that Reiki falls under them. That is the total authority regarding it as there is nothing else in writing as yet. This means that the Massage Board investigators can choose how they react {take action} against anyone who practices Reiki in Florida without having a Massage Therapy License.

This is a very important issue and effects many people residing in Florida and will eventually effect others in other states as well.

There will be a Board meeting on Oct 28-29 { the location should be in the Tampa Area this time} which I have written to and asked to be included in the Board.

Let us understand some basic reality here. Reiki is and always has been a separate healing modality that enhances other modalities and it has never required any specific medical knowledge and has never been a part of any other modality.

To require everyone practicing Reiki to become a massage therapist is outrageous and pointless and this effort must be stopped.

Many of us have Massage training, some are certified and licensed Massage practitioners while others just have learned it and choose not to do it for a living, but it is clear to all that one has nothing to do with the other.

Reiki is a gift which every living being processes and as such it can not nor should it be, controlled by a specific group.

If it is possible for you to attend the Board meeting in Oct you will have to write to them at:

Board of Massage
2020 Capitol Circle S.E.
Bin C09
Tallahassee, Fl. 32399-3259

     Attention Board Members

The cut off date for being included in the meeting is Sept 29th so please write ASAP so you can be included and speak up.

     I can be reached at

First of all, Kitiana (ShadowWolf) thank you for posting this. I hope you will spread this information to the entire Reiki community, including to those Reiki Masters and practitioners who are massage therapists.

There has been a concerted effort by the Joint Council (which is the national massage school lobby) to include non massage body, energy, postural and movement therapies under the heading of massage. This would be great for the massage school lobby, which stands to gain a great deal of income from forcing people who are not interested in becoming massage therapists into being required to do so, or in criminalizing those who don't, as an example to others.

Many Reiki practitioners have objections to being forced to do unclothed body work or to being forced to learn it, in order to do Reiki.

Reiki is not massage. It is spiritual laying on of hands healing which is protected under First Amendment constitutional rights. Otherwise, the Florida (and other) state authorities may as well come into churches, synagogues and spiritual gatherings where laying on of hands healing of all types is being done and arrest the priests, nuns, ministers and lay (eucharistic minister) and healers of all types.

Most importantly, we do not "diagnose" or "treat" illness using Reiki, which is a technique of spiritual laying on of hands healing which does no harm, regardless of the context in which it is used for relaxation, de-stressing or self empowerment, all of which promote healing in the deepest sense.

I suggest you distribute this email, or your own, as widely as possible, with an eye to organizing the Florida Reiki community. When your meeting takes place at the Massage Board, you should have the place packed and filled with press coverage, as well (someone in your Florida community had better do press releases, in advance to all local newspapers and AP, Wall Street Journal and international news services).

If I can help you in any way, please don't hesitate to ask. We have fought this battle successfully in New York. We have kept Reiki free of regulation here and in Texas. Now it's your turn, but it can be effectively turned around. Do not lose heart.

With Love, Peace, Blessings and Healing,
Ellen Ellen Louise Kahne, Reiki Master
founder, Reiki Peace Network and Reiki University
